Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH)

Each October, Fire Departments across the United States celebrate Fire Prevention week. Nancy Run Fire Company uses this opportunity to welcome the public to the fire station to see the equipment, meet the firefighters, and learn tips about fire safety and prevention.

October is still 7 months away and we want to make sure that fire safety and prevention tips aren't forgotten about until then!

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is a group of fire industry experts who come together to develop industry standards and recomended practices for fire safety and prevention. Their mascot, Sparky, helps children to remember the tips that we share so that everyone can remain fire safe!

Exit drills in the home (EDITH) are an important element of a home fire safety plan. You should develop a plan on how to escape a house fire (2 exits from every room) and practice these drills monthly.

Establish a meeting point! Once you and your children have escaped your home, where will you meet? Avoid confusion by establishing an area that is easily located but safely away from your home. This can be a neighbors mailbox or porch, your detached garage, or a tree located nearby. Whatever it is, make sure that everyone in your household knows what and where it is!

Does your child know how to contact emergency services? While dialing 911 is important, knowing where to send the fire department is just as important! Practice memorizing your address with your children so that in the event they must call 911, they know the appropriate address to tell the 911 dispatcher on the other end of the phone.

If you have any questions about fire safety or prevention, you can always reach out to us. Your dedicated Nancy Run Volunteers enjoy spreading awareness to our community and will help you with your questions. Contact us at info@nancyrun.org.
